Finding the Right Polymer

How do you choose a polymer for a particular application? You know the properties you require but how can the material datasheet help you? Help is at hand with the Rutland Plastics Knowledge Bank.

Finding the Right Polymer – Where to Start?

From the Rutland Plastics website homepage just click the Advice button to take you to the Knowledge Bank page. This page has the appearance of a set of apps making navigation clear and straightforward.

A good starting point is 'Material Types' under the 'Plastic Materials' heading. This will take you to a page listing all the major polymer types, along with a brief description of their key properties and typical applications. Following a link from this page will take you to more detailed information on the polymer.

Understanding Datasheets

When you reach a more advanced stage of material selection you will be looking at material datasheets. But what do all the properties listed mean? And which ones should you be comparing for the part you are designing? Clicking on the 'Datasheets Explained' link will take you to a list of all the different properties that may be found on a polymer datasheet. Once again, following links from this page will give a more detailed explanation of the test methods employed and what the results mean.

Other Factors Affecting Material Performance

Maybe you require additional performance from your polymer, or it is to be used outside, or you have some other special requirement. Different additives can be used with polymers and some of these are covered in the Knowledge Bank as well. You may be surprised at what is possible.

Further Help

The Rutland Plastics Knowledge Bank offers advice on designing for injection moulding. There is also an explanation of the injection moulding process as well as an overview of other moulding methods.
