Student showcase design and engineering innovations

An unbreakable umbrella, a colour changing plant pot that warns of problems with flowers and shrubs and a small buggy which follows whoever or whatever is holding the GPS transmitting device are just some of the 250 innovations at the annual Made in Brunel showcase.

Run by graduating Brunel University design and engineering students, this year's show takes place from 8-10 June at the Business Design Centre, London.

Paul Turnock, director of industrial design and product design at Brunel University, and creator of the project, said that Made in Brunel 2010 promised to be the best yet. "The projects we've got on show this year are simply breathtaking, and it's the ideal opportunity for industry professionals to come and meet the new up-and-coming generation of innovative thinkers from Brunel," Turnock said. "The theme of this year's show is 'Innovation that works', and many of the ideas and products designed by our graduating students will undoubtedly help shape the future, the way so many of our graduates' projects have in the past."

In addition to the design showcase there is a designated 'industry and consultancy day' on Wednesday 9 June. A 'Future Visions' event will chart the work of Brunel University product design students on eight different brands - Armitage Shanks, Bridgestone, Cambridge Audio, Crayola, Kelloggs, Land Rover, Müller and Playboy. This will be followed by talks from 10 leading figures in business, design and engineering including Jay Osgerby, Michael Wolff and speakers from Tesco, Xerox and the Design Council.
