Hard-soft plastics in single moulding

Momentive Performance Materials has launched a liquid silicone rubber (LSR) to address the rising demands for hard-soft plastic designs. The self-bonding material helps to achieve the bonding between silicone elastomers and thermoplastics and reduces assembly steps to meet various complex design requirements.

The Silopren liquid silicone rubber family of materials is aimed at the consumer electronics, medical devices, automotive and industrial manufacturers. The advanced adhesion technology between silicone elastomers and certain engineering plastics including PC (polycarbonate), PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) and co-polyesters is said to improve performance characteristics such as waterproofing, protection, durability and functionality.

LSR offers a primerless solution that combines two materials via a two-shot over-moulding process to enable hard-soft designs with cost-efficient manufacturing in one integrated moulding process.

Silopren LSR 27x9 liquid silicone rubber does not require surface treatment on the substrates, and offers short cycle times and one step curing in order to help improve productivity and enhance design freedom.

“Momentive continues to lead the market in developing silicone elastomer solutions that enable design complexity and manufacturing efficiency,” said Holger Albrecht, vice president of elastomers. “Our newest offering advances adhesion technology for moulded parts that have been previously unavailable in the market.”
