Resin manufacturer targets mass transit

Global resin supplier AOC has introduced a high performance resin system for mass transit applications.

Firepel K120-MTA is a unique one-part system that is both halogen-free and does not require antimony or aluminum trihydrate (ATH) to achieve its fire-retardant properties.

AOC's unique combination of properties produce fire-retardant and low-smoke composites that are lighter weight, stronger and easier to fabricate than many that are made from mineral-filled resins.

Unlike conventional low smoke resins, K120-MTA achieves its fire-retardant performance through its proprietary intumescent mechanism that also enable excellent wet out and spray characteristics, crack resistance, and low density.

It has developed the resin specifically for use on mass transit vehicles such as trains and buses and says that parts using K120-MTA have a potential weight savings of up to 30% compared to standard composites using antimony or ATH.

Fletcher Lindberg, vice president of marketing for AOC, said: "K120-MTA utilises proprietary halogen-free technologies to achieve the highest fire-retardant and low-smoke characteristics possible.

"And because its excellent performance is achieved without ATH, K120-MTA has a much lower specific gravity, which makes it easier to process than traditional systems."
