Why I’m happy in January

January. It can be a bit of a long and depressing month can't it. But there is reason to be cheery.

Its seven years since 'The Great Recession', at least that's what Wikipedia calls it, and UK PLC has battened down the hatches. We've taken our fair share of economic pummelling and in general it's been a long hard slog to get to where we are today.

We are back to positive economic growth, order books are filling up, and engineering jobs are being advertised – not cut. The companies that have successfully ridden the economic storm are leaner, more efficient, and are better able to react to all sorts of adverse trading conditions. Ideas are flourishing and so is the enthusiasm for innovation and trade.

I have never known such positivity around engineering both inside and outside of industry. Government wants more for the first time in a generation. Industry is no longer the problem child asked to stand in the corner but the liberator of economic stability. The hard work has paid off and generally the UK is in a good place making inroads, that in many cases, are the envy of the rest of Europe.

We should take pride in the fact that we have weathered the worst economic storm for a generation, and come out of it stronger, more dominant and much more confident. The time to regroup, consolidate and 'restructure' seems to be behind us.

It seems 2015 is set to be a year that could see the UK capitalise on many new opportunities. The dark days are over, and it is now time to really leverage that famous British innovation and grit.
