New ceramic coating enables wider adoption of composite materials

Zircotec Group has developed the first plasma applied thermal barrier coating that can be used with composites that require a Class A display surface. The new technology allows vehicle manufactures to use the lightweight materials in places that have previously not been possible, such as aerodynamic aids near exhaust pipes or the exhaust shrouds themselves.  Read More

High-performance composites made via novel 3D printing technique

A team of researchers at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) has demonstrated a novel 3D printing method that yields unprecedented control of the arrangement of short fibres embedded in polymer matrices. They used this additive manufacturing technique to program fibre orientation within epoxy composites in specified locations, enabling the creation of structural materials that are optimised for strength, stiffness, and damage tolerance.  Read More

Melting hurts rather than helps sprayed metal coatings to stick

When bonding two pieces of metal, either the metals must melt where they meet or some molten metal must be introduced between the pieces. A solid bond then forms when the metal solidifies again. But researchers at MIT have found that in some situations, melting can actually inhibit metal bonding rather than promote it.  Read More

Breakthrough for crack propagation in glass

Researchers have long pondered the origin of delicate crisscross faceted patterns that are commonly found on the surfaces of broken material. Typical crack speeds in glass easily surpass a kilometre per second, and broken surface features may be smaller than a millimetre. Since the formation of surface structure lasts a tiny fraction of a second, the processes generating these patterns have been largely a mystery.  Read More

Optical method to pinpoint weak spots in jet engine thermal coatings

For the first time, researchers from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, have demonstrated that an optical analysis method can reveal weak areas in ceramic thermal barrier coatings that protect jet engine turbines from high temperatures and wear. The technique could be used to predict how long coatings would last on an airplane and might eventually lead to new thermal barrier coatings, making engines more efficient and cutting both the cost and pollution of air travel.   Read More

Strengthening 3D printed parts for real-world use

3D printed parts are used in a variety of industries from aerospace and defence to digital dentistry and medical devices. These parts are often fragile and traditionally used in the prototyping phase of materials or as display pieces. Material uses solar energy to remove man-made dye pollutants from water

4D printing load bearing structures

Researchers at ETH Zurich, led by head of the Engineering Design and Computing Lab Kristina Shea, have developed a construction principle to control the deformation of load bearing 4D printed objects. The moveable and shape-variable objects can be printed as flat components that can be folded out later. Smart fabric turns body heat in to electricity

Researchers have developed a fabric to convert body heat into electricity to power wearable devices. The work was carried out at Purdue University in the US. The garment creates a flexible thermoelectric generator, which uses semiconductor strings woven into a fabric. The ‘generator’ can convert heat from any type of complex surface into a small amount of electricity.  Read More

McLaren Honda brings 3D printer to track and will race parts during 2017 season

Stratasys FDM and PolyJet 3D Printing Solutions are being used to produce final 3D printed race-ready parts for the 2017 McLaren MCL32 Formula One Car. The technology will also, for the first time, be used at trackside to produce parts and tooling on demand for immediate evaluation during tests and races. The goal is to bring about new car developments earlier by moving from idea to component in a shorter timeframe, by accelerating design modifications and reducing weight to increase performance.  Read More

Scientists synthesise first sample of transparent silicon nitride for super hard windows

Scientists at DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) have synthesised what they claim to be the first transparent sample of a popular industrial ceramic. The result is a super-hard window made of cubic silicon nitride that can potentially be used under extreme conditions like in engines. Cubic silicon nitride (c-Si3N4) forms under high pressure and is the second hardest transparent nanoceramic after diamond but can withstand substantially higher temperatures.  Read More
