Superhydrophobic and oleophobic coating repels almost any liquid

Florida based UltraTech International has produced what it is calling Ultra-Ever Dry. The coating uses a proprietary nanotechnology that when applied to an object creates a near translucent white barrier on the surface. After a 30 minute cure in the open air, treated objects are able to repel water and oil based liquids with amazing efficiency.

The company produced a short YouTube video to show the coatings quirky, but impressive, super hydrophobic properties. Since February, the video has had over 6million views showing impressive demos of just how effect the coating is.

Ultra-Ever Dry is hydrophobic meaning it repels water, but it is also oleophobic meaning it repels hydrocarbons. This makes it potentially useful for dealing with oil spills. However, on the smaller scale, it means the coating will repel any oil based product from paints to motor oil as well as water and even wet concrete.

The coating can be used for an array of applications from anti-corrosion to anti-bacteria. Since it ensures water and moisture never actually come in to contact the base material it has potential medical use as dust, dirt, water and other liquids that contain bacteria or radiation will never actually contact the surface of the coated material. This makes decontaminate to sterile much easier.

Many products fail from moisture, water, oil or simply getting too dirty for continued use. The coating could extend the life everything from work gloves to electric motors by preventing moisture on the windings. It could also be used on nuts and bolts to prevent corrosion, and virtually any item that needs to be kept dry, corrosion free, uncontaminated or clean. The coating is said to be so good it actually stops the build up of ice in freezing conditions as the moisture cannot bond to the object.

The working temperature range for the product is -34°C to 149°C once it has been applied and UltraTech says a coating will last between two to eight months, depending on the environment and in direct sunlight and outdoor conditions, before recoating of the top coat would be required. When used in indoor or covered applications outdoors, the coating should last for a year or more. It is currently looking to add other formulas to its product line that can provide years of useful life before any recoat is needed.

The coating can be applied to almost any material including steel, aluminium, other metals, plastic, leather, fabric, wood, and concrete. One of the breakthroughs for this product is its abrasion resistance, registering 110 on the Taber Abrasion Method.
